SONLIG shines a light on Ilanga

Dr Sylvia Zulu - M-Ubuntu
Dr Sylvia Zulu – M-Ubuntu

A highlight of the 1st Annual Innovation in Education Summit, held at DUT on 8-11 November 2013 was the SONLIG digital library intranet device (built on a powerful little lunchbox-size Raspberry Pi computer) that pupils in schools without Internet access can access via their phones. The SONLIG device does not need Internet access. It is pre-loaded with a vast library of open source materials from the Internet including Wikipedia, World Health Organisation materials, Project Gutenberg books and Khan Academy videos. Each device can deliver up to 40 phone connections – just right for a class of pupils who have phones, but who may have no school library, no Internet and sometimes no electricity. This great piece of appropriate technology is set to revive a remarkable mobile-learning project started in 2011 by Dr Sylvia Zulu and her colleague Odette Swift from the Department of Language Practice. Based at Ilanga Secondary School, and using donated smartphones, DUT student facilitators were trained in using mobile-learning techniques to provide support for matriculants at Ilanga. The results were excellent and had a positive impact on the school’s matric results. The downside was similar to that afflicting other projects that relied on cell phones to deliver audio visual material- unreasonably high cell phone data bundle costs. By incorporating the SONLIG technology in their high school partnership and collaboration project (developing learning applications and content) Dr Zulu’s M-Ubuntu project can now build on its past successes unimpeded by limited Internet access.

Library in the Zone

DUT Staff members at the launch.

A new iPad Zone was launched at DUT’s B.M. Patel Library today, putting 15 brand new iPads into the hands of our students. The miracle of these little devices is that each one is a key to all the knowhow and the wisdom in the world. It’s significant that it’s our university library that is making these tablets available to students, because the library is traditionally the heart of the university – the library has always been the store of accumulated knowledge that students and lecturers draw on to learn, develop and conduct research.

In the past, human knowledge was stored in the books and journals that still line the shelves of our library. With the opening this new facility – the iPad Zone (along with its other services like laptops-on-loan, and Kindles for e-books) the library has propelled our students into the new online digital storehouse of knowledge.

Library Director Lucille Webster thanked IT Manager Sagren Moodley and Core Group representative Lise Botes for making the iPad Zone a reality.

Value of taking learning online

virtual_classroom_04Important takeaways from the recent TIME article by MIT President, Rafael Reif, are that some teaching is actually better online, and that e-learning in a blended environment allows lecturers more time for classroom engagement with their students. Reif quotes findings that show that online exercises enable students to retain introductory material through practice, feedback and reinforcement. By shifting the content component of their courses online, lecturers are released to explore innovative teaching during face-to-face sessions with students.
